February Books

One of my goals for 2011 is to broaden my horizons when it comes to choosing books to read. I still allow myself my regular selections but try to alternate with different genres that I wouldn't normally choose. Here was January's list.

February: (yes, I read a lot. I don't watch TV and am a speed reader!)

Unbelievable by Sara Shepard3 stars out of 5. This is the 4th in the series written for Young Adults. Hush now, I know that's no longer me. Guilty addiction!

A Spot of Bother by Mark Haddon3.5 stars out of 5. Very different from his first book. Well written and entertaining.

Rescue by Anita Shreve3 stars out of 5. A really fast read...my typical book selection.

Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child by Marc Weissbluth4 stars out of 5. I read this when Samara was a newborn and reread it with Presley. It has a lot of helpful tips (watching for drowsy cues, putting babies down for naps after 1-2 hours of wakefulness) but I find it lacking in other areas. No suggestions on nighttime wakings, early awakenings from naps...he simply repeats himself throughout the whole book. Still 4 stars though because what he DOES suggest absolutely works.

The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin5 stars out of 5. I believe I mentioned this while I was reading it. I loved it. Super inspirational.

A Dog's Purpose by Bruce W. Cameron5 stars out of 5. Absolutely sweet and heartwarming. A must read for any dog lover.

Indulgence in Death by J.D. Robb3 stars out of 5. This is the 31st book in the series. It would not come as a surprise that it is becoming a bit tired and recycled!

An Innocent, a Broad by Ann Leary2 stars out of 5. This is by Denis Leary's wife. It's supposed to be really funny...the book centers on her having her baby at 28 weeks so I found it not so funny and frankly quite stressful!

The Girl Who Played with Fire by Stieg Larsson5 stars out of 5. Can't wait to read the final book!

The Matter with Morris by David Bergen1 star out of 5. I just could not get into this book. I couldn't relate to the main character (51 year old man going through a mid-life crisis).

This Is Where We Live by Janelle Brown2 stars out of 5. Not fantastic but a decent enough read. I chose this simply based on its cover!

Stolen by Ron Chudley0 out of 5 stars. I actually couldn't even make myself finish this. It was so poorly written and insulting. Ridiculously stupid plot turns. I could go on but what's the point?!

What have you been reading lately? Or, if you're a TV watcher instead, what have you been watching?

I reaaaally want to read "The Girl...." series by Stieg Larsson.

I just have to get through Dracula first. It's a little dry, but I am enjoying it!

I'm spending my hours in the hospital catching up on Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. I'm only on book #3, so I have a ways to go.

I'm off to check that book by Denis Leary's wife. 28 weeks? Pshaw. Novice. :)

I really want to read Room, but won't spend $30 on it. Suppose I should get a library card, lol.

I keep meaning to do a post like this...maybe this will remind me.

nyanarose: Room was fantastic, I definitely recommend it!

LOVE the cover on that one, too.. Tulips are the key to my heart :)

I love reading but I NEVER find the time anymore. I'm going to have to make a better effort.

WOW! You are a reader! I am about to start the third Dragon Tatoo series book. Cna't wait. I love how book two leaves off and that is where book three starts!

I need to get that sleep book...I never read it with the boys but have had so many people swear by it.

Good for you for not watching tv. So healthy. I couldn't do it. I have a few things that I love.

Oh great, more to add to my super long list! I want to read room too. I'm currently reading The Lonely Pologimist and I'm loving it! The only problem is that it's huge and in hardcover so my hands go numb when reading (which makes for a slow read)!

I just finished Catcher in the Rye and Somewhere Inside (by Lisa and Laura Ling) and also loved them!

7 years of grad school killed my love of reading, recreational and otherwise. I hope it comes back soon.

I've heard the dog book is amazing. I can't wait to do some leisure reading again!

Going to add a bunch of yours to my list! I just read a really "out of my usual" book...The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. It was decent, you know I'm a reader, not quite as fast as you! It took me about a week, so it did move. If you want a really "different" one it's decent - sciencey (not a word, I know) but still a plot!

Have you read the other Stieg Larson books in that series? I read all three and loved them!

You know what I've read, but the books I have "on deck" are One Day, The Imperfectionists, Hunger Games, and Commencement. And I'm loving Sarah's Key.
