My friend, CanadianMama, asks a question every Tuesday to get answers. I've got a dozen questions going through my head right now concerning Sammy's 2nd birthday so I'm playing along this week.
Please help! I have to get started on planning birthday party(ies?) and need inspiration.
- should I have a separate friend and family birthday party? Is more than one party too much for a 2 year old? How many guests are overwhelming at that age?
- theme? Should I do a theme or just keep it as a regular birthday party? Themes can be super fun but also a lot of work.
- grab bags...these will be a lot of work/fun to do. I'm trying not to include anything plastic or candy. I'm thinking a book, I'll make little purses for the girls (what about the boys?), maybe make a felt game to take home?
- keepsake gift ideas? Last year Shawn got Samara her own real little size guitar. We'd like to stick with the non-plastic keepsake gift ideas. I was thinking one of those really cool swing sets/play sets from Costco...but they are VERY expensive and take up a lot of room so am open to other ideas!
- what was your most favorite birthday present ever?
Thanks for your help!

We're planning to get Maddy a sit bike/run bike for her birthday. Not sure if we're going to get a wooden one or a metal one yet.
I think we're going to do separate "parties", though her friend party will be very small, possibly only two friends (who are sisters). I think I'll try to do felt food for them for loot bags. Or maybe bean bags.
I like the guideline of the number of friends = the age of the birthday kid.
Party: At 2, I would still do combined. I never had separate parties until I was in school with my own little friends I made.
Theme: Could be cute. Perhaps ladybugs and do ladybug cupcakes instead of a full cake.
Gift: A got a super cute mini rocking chair made of coloured wicker... as a baby gift!
We do one big party for Chicken and rent out a room at the rec centre (has an indoor play area to keep the kids occupied). We do it this way because our house isn't big enough for my massive family and because after two hours the room time is up and we have to leave (unlike when you have it at your house and everyone lingers way later than they should). Plus, it's easier for me than two seperate parties (way too much work).
Okay, I've got a great theme: 2nd birthday lol! Or, what about socks for Samara's love of socks haha! yeah, I never do a theme (just do a cool cake with whatever he's into - last two years it was construction - this year it's a motorbike).
And goodie bags - I usually go to the dollar store for activities (sticker books, beach toys, etc) and a treat (when he turned one I did animal crackers and when he turned two I did colored gold fish) but I had a friend who did wooden puzzles and cut out pictures of the kids at the party and glued them under the puzzle piece which I thought was super neat. I've always given out the goodie bags when the kids left but this year I'm going to give them out when Chicken is opening his presents so the kids have something for themselves.
Whew, that was a novel hey!
I think one party should be fine. As far as number of guests, I think that depends upon each child.
If you choose a theme, do something easy (like socks!). Otherwise, you'll spend way too much time agoniIng over details.
Favorite present: hmm. Only one? I have a rocking chair that I was given and still have. I can't wait to give it to Alice :)
I read on a mommy blog that a cool "gift bag" idea is just giving them a cupcake or something like that....that way it's not something that they have to keep around, and doesn't add to the clusterfuck of toys their kid already has :)
I think one party is good. Depending on how many people, though....if you have like 5 kids and their assorted parents, that's lots.
My dad made my sister and I a puzzle rocking chair when we were really little.....I honestly didn't know he actually made it himself until recently, lol. I like stuff like that, that they can have forever and possibly give to their own kids :)
