We had a great trip. A few rough parts but overall really good. We went to see one of my closest friends, Janice, and her family. Samara is over the moon for Janice's 2 boys. Since we last visited about 6 weeks ago, she has asked about them every single day without fail. This was the first time the husbands hung out and they hit it off too (yay!). While we were at Janice's, we got a new (to us) van. It is awesome. I've been driving a 1993 beater (I will always remember her fondly) and having something a decade newer brings tons of nice features.
We then spent a few days in Calgary. My grandparents (Bill's parents) were celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary and all the family gathered in Calgary for the celebration. They were even given certificates from the Prime Minister and the Queen congratulating them. We headed to the zoo and had a blast (pics to come on Wordless Wednesday this week). Samara was thrilled to spend some time with her cousins, Alex and Kiera. Presley loved all the extra attention and was held by so many different people...including a waitress at the restaurant who couldn't resist.
We also spent some time with Shawn's aunt and uncle. Samara loved playing (terrorizing?) their cat, Cinnamon. She fell down the stairs there but didn't seem overly bothered by it thankfully.
The girls did really well...missing naps, eating at different times, sleeping at different places, being stuck in traffic jams, etc. But, after a couple of days, they were starting to go a bit mental. We decided to head home a bit earlier than planned in hopes of catching the girls at bedtime and having them sleep the entire way home.
Things were going really well. Presley fell asleep immediately and although Sammy didn't sleep at all, she was happy enough looking out the window and talking about how much fun she had during the trip. We had about an hour left to the drive when Shawn says, "wow, this drive is going great, the girls are doing so well!"...duh duh duhhhhhhhh. Presley wakes up and Samara starts getting fidgety so we decide to stop for ice cream. The trip goes downhill from there. Samara gets scared of a Dilly Bar, Presley screams bloody murder, Samara copies Presley screaming bloody murder, Samara gets in trouble for fake screaming and then has a very real meltdown, I cheer Samara up by making her giggle uncontrollably which results in her throwing up over herself. Funny how quickly things can go from good to bad! The 1 hour it takes to get home feels like 5. We get home and are absolutely shell shocked. We huddle in the corner in fetal position rocking and drooling for about 2 hours until we have the strength to drag ourselves to bed.
We survived though. Definitely more good than bad. We will do it again. Just not really soon!

Sounds like a really nice time overall! Wonder why Sammy was scared of the Dilly Bar? Maddy is frightened by the oddest things too. Toddlers!
It's funny how whenever you say "this is going great" it goes downhill immediately afterwards! Sounds like a great time overall though!
Those are the forbidden words in our car. Although, for the most part, I was blessed with car sleepers.
Sounds like a lovely trip!
First of all, 60 years? That is remarkable! And secondly, the last part of this post was so funny I almost shot milk through my nose. It's always funnier when it's someone else's kids.
I decided to read our last book club book since I bought the stupid thing. It's the Forgotten Garbage.....I mean Garden and so far it's just silly.
I have The Red Tent sitting on my bedside table right now. Can't wait to read it.
Happy Canada to the four of you-road trips are always a challenge
I am sure Cinnamon was concerned with her space being invaded
Give my best to Grandpa and Grandma Gilchrist on 60 years
I bet it was the icecream. My kids are not the best tummy travelers. We avoid any milk/dairy until we have arrived at our location.
