Do any other Stay At Home Moms ever feel a bit guilty, like their child might be getting better activities if they were at a daycare? I feel this way sometimes so I decided to do something about it. I have started planning more activities for the girls to do, besides playing with toys and going places. I'll try to post regularly what the girls are doing. If you have any suggestions, I'd love to hear them!
Oatmeal Sensory Tub
Samara LOVED this one. The texture of the dry oatmeal felt neat and she liked searching through the oats to find the letters. We also got out measuring spoons and cups for pouring. This was done outside (thank goodness!) because it was messy. I think we've fed the neighborhood birds enough to last till next Spring!
Pipecleaners and BeadsI got this from a friend who is an Elementary Teacher. This is great to work on fine motor skills, colours and counting. Sammy matched up the colour of bead with the same colour of pipe cleaner and threaded the bead through.
Beans Sensory Tub
I bought a variety of dry beans from the bulk section of the grocery store and let Sammy at it. She squished them in her hands, counted them, tried to eat them and poured them. It was messy...this would have been a good outdoor activity. I'm still finding the odd bean!
Animal Mix-up Legos
These have been fun. You could use any picture but would need to resize it so it fits properly on the Megablocks. I didn't have the patience to figure that out so check out the link for pictures that are the right size.
Water Sensory
This one is easy and fairly mess-free. Fill a clean sink with warm water and various bowls, spoons and cups for pouring. I suppose you could even add soap and dirty dishes if you really wanted to multitask!

Amelia's fave game is called 'Nut People'. Since Sammy already likes the sink with the water, just throw some nuts in there. Big nuts still in there shells. Amelia used to do it on the floor in a big bowl but she has graduated to the sink because she likes the idea of standing like a big person. She loves to move the nuts from measuring cup to cup.
Actually now she has thrown her polly pocket princesses in there as well.
I tried the oatmeal sensory, since Jaelon doesn't like getting his hands dirty anymore. It didn't fly! I do a rice one, which he doesn't seem to mind. Forgot about the beans, so I'll have to make a trip to the bulk store. He should like that one!!
you really are a superstar... Hadley likes our keys? ha!
Oh yeah, pipe cleaners and beads were a huge hit in our home last year! Same with the rice box! I like the idea of the block match-up and sorting. chicken is super into sorting these days!
Great ideas, I will have to give these a try after the move!
I love the megablock idea! Super cool!
I'm going to *try* to move out of my comfort zone and let my boys do one of the sensory tubs, even though I know it will be a huge mess!
The boys love to string beads on shoe laces- another level of threading for Sammy once she masters the pipe cleaners. Show laces don't hold as still as pipe cleaners! :)
The boys love to play in the sink. I hadn't thought of the idea that Catherine mentioned with nuts. To extend that, you could experiment with which things float and which things sink. Have Sammy (or my boys) guess first whether they think it will sink or float!
(Can you tell I've been teaching pretty well full time- lesson plans are coming out! LOL)
Great ideas! We do rice and pasta too for sensory stuff. I want to try the pipecleaners now!
Can you come teach my first graders? ;) Cute ideas! And I love how determined she looks in the pipe cleaners picture!
I'm constantly feeling guilty doing activities that are sub-par compared to daycare. I've been meaning to do some sensory play, but haven't gotten around to it, other than water play, which we do almost daily. Plus the park for sand play, but it's not super sensory because Maddy doesn't like dirty hands.
Playdough has been a hit lately. And anything that involves cutting and gluing or painting. I really want to make slime in the near future.
Make sure all your dishes are plastic and there you go another dishwasher.
It is fun to see Samara with the pipe cleaner and beads-what a difference a year makes-I still giggle at her watching me put Christmas bells on pipe cleaners-she was not too sure how I was doing it and I think she thought the bells were balls eventually-so would kick them and just put them in a basket or something else
