Valentine's Day Ramblings

Happy Hallmark Day! Happy Grower's Direct Day! I mean, Happy Valentine's Day!

If it's not totally obvious by now, I think Valentine's Day is a scam. I don't feel the need to participate in the "holiday". I'm perfectly happy letting my loved ones know I love them every day of the year and refuse to buy overpriced chocolates and flowers on a day designated by the commercial masses.

Am I a scrooge? Kind of, I suppose. I could just suck it up and Shawn and I could try to outdo each other by buying elaborate and thoughtful gifts and going out for dinner on the busiest day of the year with tons of strangers. But, we don't do that for any other occasion so it would be weird. I realize we're a minority. I'm not judging you if you celebrate it. I get how it's fun to have something to look forward to. Next year at this time, Sammy will be in preschool and I'm sure there will be a celebration in her class. Don't worry. I'm not going to ruin it for her...or Presley when it's her turn. I'll put on my game face, start cutting out hearts like there's no tomorrow and baking the best pink cupcakes ever!

What do you think...are you a heart day enthusiast? Do you think I'm being a heart day Grinch?

My husband and I stopped "celebrating" Valentines a long time ago. It did feel like a lot of effort just to spend money that was better spent somewhere else. But then my kids got bigger and they love it. So I started making them my Valentines. I buy them treats and make sure they have nice valentines for their classes. It's a lot more fun now because they don't see the commercialism in it yet. They just see treats and that makes them happy so that makes me happy.

I did start a new tradition though. I figure since I'm someone's Valentine I shouldn't have to cook because I hate cooking. So we order in on Valentines now and let the kids eat with us. We can be romantic later. Wink wink.

I don't mind it so much now but I was exactly where you are a few years ago.

Years ago your Anti-Valentines practices rubbed off on me. I don't like it or celebrate it either. ;)

Hubby and I are in the same boat and have been since before we even got married.

I do get the kiddos a little something and we make heart shaped cupcakes.

I'm pretty much with you. We don't really do anything special. We'll cook a nicer dinner at home tonight and enjoy it as a family as we do every night. No gifts exchanged, just spending time together.

the boys had lots of fun making valentines for their friends and cousins. We talked about how it is a day to make sure to let your friends know you are happy to have them in your life and your family know that you love them.

But, like you, we do this on a regular daily basis as well.

I agree with Catherine. Its fun for kids until they see the commercialism in it. Then you become cynics like us....haha

Chicken enjoyed writing his name on the Valentines this year but then had no interest in going to his party at school. So, we skipped it!

M and I don't celebrate it either but we do try to make an effort to do something that will strengthen our marriage. Sometimes that is playing cards, sometimes it's going out to dinner, sometimes it's going to a movie together but we don't buy each other gifts. I do think it's a made up holiday but I like to try to turn it around and just celebrate love :)

We just did cards this year...and honestly, even that was a chore for both of us. I think we feel obligated somehow though. Well, we did go out to dinner last Friday, but it would have been about time for a date for us regardless of Valentine's Day or not.

Logan celebrated it at school this year and I made Valentine's for my first graders and his school friends. I was SHOCKED at how much "stuff" my first graders gave with their cards. I remember when it was just cards - they did whole goodie bags! That's a little much for my taste.

We don't get too into Valentine's Day, but my mom took Grace overnight on the weekend so it was a good excuse to go out for dinner! I don't like spending money on V Day, we usually have a nice dinner at home and exchange cards. B surprised me with roses today!

I love Valentine's day, but in a non-commercial way. Heart-shaped sugar cookies, homemade cards, making a nice dinner and special dessert. Dan and I have done small gifts in the past but didn't do anything this year. We gave him a card that I made at a class.

My mom always made it a special day when we were little, so I don't think of it as a romantic day, just a day to celebrate the people you love.

I love it, I'm cheesy like that, and we don't do gifts it's just about spending time together.

We've never done Valentine's Day, and I was *this* close to ruining it for Tot because I forgot that I needed to celebrate it for her sake. Thankfully I had some reserve gifts to give the girls.
